Facts and Figures: German MedTech market

Germany has the largest medical device market in Europe and third largest in the world after the United States and Japan. The current market size is almost $27 billion, and it is expected to grow rapidly over the coming years with at least $1 billion per year the coming five years.

The main medical devices that Germany produces are disposable equipment & supplies accounting for 39.6%, Ophthalmic equipment accounting for 21.2% and IV Diagnostics accounting for 15.3%.

The medical device manufacturers in Germany employ around 210.000 people in total. However, 1200 manufacturers (> 20 employees) employ 130.000 people.

The main regions where medical device manufacturers are located in Germany are Baden-Württemburg, Bayern, Nordrhein-Westfalen and Schleswig-Holstein.

Germany is home to 202 notified bodies, of which 11 assess medical and IVD devices. 

Germany has a market share of 28% within Europe when it comes to medical devices and 20% when it comes to in-vitro diagnostic devices.
